How often do I need to replace ultraviolet lamps?

It is recommended that all ultraviolet lamps be replaced annually or up to a maximum of 12,000 hours. Lamps may still glow after 12,000 hours, however, they will not produce sufficient UVC light output for proper UV dosage.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding replacement of ultraviolet lamps for your specific system(s), it is best to refer to the User’s Instruction as specified by the Original Equipment Manufacturer. Does UV Superstore have a lamp recycling program?

UV Superstore, Inc. is not currently set up with a recycling program. However, we feel it is best to contact your local recycling facility for recycling such products. This green alternative surpasses any idea of shipping the lamps back to us so that we can forward to a recycling facility. This reduces the risks of lamp breakage during shipment and the potential release of mercury.

How often do I need to clean quartz sleeves? And what is the proper method of doing so?

It is recommended to regularly clean your quartz sleeves as the chemical build-up can block UV transmission and eventually lead to the degradation of the quartz wall. Depending on water quality and lamp replacement, the quartz sleeve should be hand cleaned on a periodic basis normally annually when replacing the ultraviolet lamp.

For proper cleaning procedures of your specific quartz sleeves, please refer to the User’s Instruction as specified by the Original Equipment Manufacturer. If you do not have a copy, please don’t hesitate to contact us and we can assist you in finding one.

How often do I need to replace quartz sleeves?

It is recommended that all quartz sleeves be replaced a minimum of every three (3) years (36 months) to insure the proper operation of your ultraviolet system(s).

Replacement Parts

How often do I need to replace O-rings?

UV Superstore recommends annual replacement of o-rings as UV light can degrade the material of an o-ring. With the low cost associated with an o-ring it is beneficial for you to replace annually to insure the proper operation of your ultraviolet system(s).

About ultraviolet (UV) light and UV water disinfection

What is UV light and how does it work?

The term ultraviolet means “beyond violet” (from Latin ultra, “beyond”) and violet is the color of the shortest wavelength of visible light. UV light is a form of light that is invisible to the human eye. Ultraviolet disinfection technology was first discovered over 100 years ago. The scientists discovered that if you exposed microorganisms (pathogens) to UV light, their reproduction was limited. They found that wavelengths between 200 and 300 nanometers (NM) are categorized as germicidal meaning this range was most effective in eliminating bacteria and viruses.

Microorganisms found in water are exposed to ultraviolet light when passed by these special UV germicidal lamps. Thus, the ultraviolet energy instantly damages the genetic material, DNA and RNA, within the bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. This process eliminates the DNA’s ability to reproduce and cause infection leaving it unable to multiply; therefore, the harmful microorganisms will die and no longer pose a health risk. With ultraviolet technology it is possible to inactivate harmful microorganisms, including E. coli, Cryptosporidium and Giardia, to name a few.

Who uses UV disinfection?

Anyone can use ultraviolet disinfection to protect their water supplies from pathogens. Today, many trusted industries use ultraviolet disinfection to include Municipalities, food and beverage, hospitals, pharmaceutical, industrial manufacturing, off shore drilling, semi-conductor fabricators, Aqua-farming, as well as residential markets, and many others.

Why are more industries and residential markets switching to ultraviolet disinfection?

Ultraviolet germicidal disinfection is considered environmentally friendly and a green alternative for a wide variety of public services and home water treatment systems. The UV disinfection process is a non-chemical method for destroying harmful microorganisms found in water by altering their genetic material thus rendering them from reproducing. Unlike germicidal chemicals, there are no corrosive materials and no disinfection by-products (DBPs).

The use of germicidal ultraviolet lamps to disinfect bacteria, mold, fungi, and viruses do not pose any health hazards that are associated with the use of harmful chemicals.

Is ultraviolet light dangerous?

Ultraviolet rays are found in sunlight and contain three types, UVA, UVB, and UVC. The light used for UV disinfection is UVC and is most dangerous to your eyes and skin. Ultraviolet systems are designed in such a way that it protects the end user from ever being exposed to the harmful effects of UVC light.

Does ultraviolet disinfection change the water?

Since ultraviolet light is a chemical free process, nothing is added or removed from the water. Under normal conditions, UV light does not change the taste, color, or odor of water.

How is the uv lamp protected from the water?

Ultraviolet lamps do not come in contact with the water. The lamp is placed into a glass like tube called a quartz sleeve. The glass quartz sleeve allows ultraviolet light to transmit into the water. The quartz sleeve also allows the ultraviolet lamp to maintain temperatures at its optimum performance. Depending on water quality and lamp replacement, the quartz sleeve should be hand cleaned on a periodic basis normally annually when replacing the ultraviolet lamp.
